Dunedin Start-up Weekend: Expanding Your Vision Success

Over the past weekend Impact was proud to be a sponsor for the Dunedin Startup Weekend.

The 54hr business development competition pitched seven teams of entrepreneurs against each other in a bid to win $10,000 worth of TradeMe advertising, plus a huge range of sponsored business and technical support services. Teams were formed over the weekend from a combination of designers, business people and computer programmers, some of who came from as far afield as Queenstown, Christchurch and Auckland for the event.

The range of innovative concepts developed and pitched within the 54hr time frame was impressive. Ranging from energy savings calculators and online applications, through to online photo editing services. The competition challenges teams to establish a solid framework for a compelling business model, validate the market potential of the idea and where possible launch their ventures within the weekend. The range of innovative concepts developed and pitched within the 54hr time frame was impressive. At times energy levels and team work skills are also challenged as the presentation deadline draws close. As one participant put it, “I am 40, I have a PhD and have worked in various businesses for years. I can honestly say this is the best weekend of professional development I have ever had”.

The winning team SKRMSH took out the grand prize with a live working prototype of an app / website aimed at gamifying online arguments.

The weekend showed the potential of the technology sector in Dunedin and the talent of local people. Overall one message shone through… if you want a truly scaleable business, you have to begin to dream global.
